Stiff vs Regular Shaft Flex — How to Know Which One You Need

13 May 2026

Stiff vs regular golf shaft flex comparison guide

Shaft flex is one of the most commonly misunderstood specs in golf equipment. Too stiff a shaft and you'll lose height, spin, and feel. Too soft and you'll balloon the ball and lose control. Getting it right is one of the simplest ways to add distance and accuracy — without changing anything about your swing. Here's how to figure out which flex you actually need.

What Is Shaft Flex?

Shaft flex describes how much a golf shaft bends during the swing. A stiffer shaft bends less; a more flexible shaft bends more. The amount of flex affects how the clubface is positioned at impact, which in turn affects launch angle, spin rate, and direction.

Standard flex designations from most flexible to stiffest: L (Lady) → A (Senior) → R (Regular) → S (Stiff) → X (Extra Stiff). Most adult male golfers fall into the Regular or Stiff category.

Stiff vs Regular: What's the Actual Difference?

Regular flex driver shaft — best for moderate swing speeds 85-95 mph

A Regular flex shaft is designed for golfers with moderate swing speeds (typically 75–95 mph with a driver). The added flex helps the shaft store and release energy more efficiently, resulting in higher launch and more carry distance.

A Stiff flex shaft is designed for faster swingers (90–110 mph). It resists the additional forces generated by a faster swing, helping to deliver a lower, more penetrating ball flight with less ballooning spin.

The key issue is that playing the wrong flex in either direction has real consequences:

  • Too stiff for your swing speed = low ball flight, loss of distance, weak contact
  • Too flexible for your swing speed = high, ballooning shots, inconsistent contact, hooks

Swing Speed vs Flex: Quick Reference

Driver Swing Speed Recommended Flex
Under 75 mph Lady (L) or Senior (A)
75–85 mph Senior (A) or Regular (R)
85–95 mph Regular (R)
95–105 mph Stiff (S)
105–115 mph Stiff (S) or X-Stiff (X)
115+ mph X-Stiff (X)

Note: These are general guidelines. Swing tempo, attack angle, and shaft weight also influence the ideal flex.

Swing Speed Isn't the Only Factor

A slow-tempo player with a 95 mph swing speed might actually benefit from a Regular flex because their gradual loading and unloading of the shaft benefits from extra flex. A quick-tempo player at the same speed might need Stiff. Players with a steep downswing also tend to load shafts more aggressively and may need a stiffer flex at a given swing speed.
