Titleist Vokey SM11 Wedges: What Changed and Is It Worth Upgrading?

Titleist Vokey SM10 Jet Black wedge — similar to SM11 design

The Titleist Vokey SM11 is now available — and it's an update worth paying attention to whether you're gaming SM10s or something older. Bob Vokey's team made meaningful changes to the face texture, sole geometry, and finish options. Here's the complete breakdown.

What's New in the SM11?

The biggest changes in the SM11 are centered on three areas:

1. Progressive Center of Gravity

Vokey repositioned the CG in each loft to optimize spin and launch. Higher lofts (54-62°) have a higher CG for more stopping power on full shots and around the green. Lower lofts (46-52°) have a lower CG for more distance control on longer approach wedges.

2. Improved Face Texture

The SM11 face features enhanced Spin Milled grooves with refined micro-texture between the grooves. Titleist claims this adds spin on partial shots and shots from the rough — the situations where you need it most.

3. Three Finishes

The SM11 launches in three finishes:

  • Tour Chrome — the classic silver finish, maximum durability, traditional look
  • Jet Black — full black PVD coating, reduced glare, softer feel at impact
  • Nickel — a warmer, satin-style finish between the two

The Grind Guide: Which Vokey Grind Is Right for You?

The grind is the most important spec in a wedge and the most misunderstood. Here's a quick guide:

F Grind — Full sole width with a slight heel relief. Versatile, works in most turf conditions. Good starting point for most golfers.

S Grind — Straight leading edge, moderate bounce, heel and toe relief. Best for players with a neutral or slightly steep attack angle who play on firm turf.

M Grind — High toe relief and significant heel relief. Designed for creative shot-making — flop shots, open-face chips. Tour-favorite grind for short game specialists.

D Grind — High bounce, wide sole. Best for steep swingers and soft course conditions. Prevents digging.

K Grind — Wide sole, significant bounce. Designed for the sand and soft turf. Particularly effective in bunkers.

L Grind — Low bounce, narrow sole. Tour players who play firm courses and want maximum versatility.

Grind Bounce Best Turf Best For
F Mid All Most players
S Mid-Low Firm Neutral attack angle
M Low-Mid All Creative short game
D High Soft Steep swingers
K High Soft/Sand Bunker specialists
L Low Firm Tour/firm course players

SM11 vs SM10: Is the Upgrade Worth It?

Honest answer: if you're gaming SM10s that are less than two years old and the grooves are in good shape, the SM11 isn't a must-upgrade. The core grind geometry is similar.

If your SM10s are older, the grooves are worn, or you've been eyeing the Jet Black finish — this is a good time to upgrade. The face texture and CG changes are legitimate improvements, not marketing talk.

SM11 Pricing

  • Tour Chrome and Jet Black: $199
  • Nickel: $209
  • Raw (unfinished): $209
