Driver Shaft Flex Guide: How to Choose Between Regular, Stiff, and X-Stiff

02 Jun 2026

Shaft flex is the most misunderstood spec in golf equipment — and playing the wrong flex is one of the most common reasons golfers lose distance and accuracy without knowing why. Here's how to get it right.

The Simple Rule — Then Why It's More Complicated

The general guideline:

  • Regular (R): Under 85 mph driver swing speed
  • Stiff (S): 85-100 mph
  • X-Stiff (X): 100+ mph

This is a reasonable starting point but it misses several important variables that a proper fitting captures.

Why Swing Speed Alone Isn't Enough

Two players with identical 95 mph swing speeds can need dramatically different shaft flexes based on:

Tempo — A smooth, slow-tempo swing loads the shaft differently than an aggressive, quick-tempo swing at the same speed. Aggressive tempo players often play stiffer than their speed would suggest.

Transition — How aggressively you transition from backswing to downswing affects how much the shaft loads and unloads. Early, aggressive transitions often need stiffer tips.

Point of maximum deflection — Where the shaft bends most during the swing affects launch and spin. Mid-kick shafts load differently than tip-stiff designs at the same flex designation.

The Problem With Flex Labels

There is no industry standard for what "Stiff" means. A Stiff from one manufacturer can be as stiff as an X-Stiff from another. The only reliable way to compare shafts across brands is to look at actual CPM (cycles per minute) measurements — which Dallas Golf fitters use during every shaft fitting session.

Regular vs Stiff — When You're In Between

If you're borderline between Regular and Stiff (around 85 mph) the right answer depends on your miss pattern:

  • Miss right/fade/slice: Try Stiff — more control through impact
  • Miss left/draw/hook: Try Regular — more help squaring the face

The Only Real Answer: Get Fitted

Every player who has been through a proper Dallas Golf shaft fitting has left with more confidence in their equipment — because the numbers confirmed their shaft choice instead of guessing.
