The Fort Worth Invitational Preview

Posted by Austin Chen on 22 May 2018

The PGA Tour travels cross town to Ft. Worth for the Fort Worth Invitational at Colonial Country Club. The field is much stronger than last week as it features 13 golfers in the Top 30 world rankings. Colonial Country Club measures out to 7,209 yards and is a Par 70. The greens are bentgrass and this is shotmaker's course. There are tight fairways and many doglegs on this Perry Maxwell/John Bredemus design. Kevin Kisner is the defending champion with a 10 under score in 2017. The field is only 121 vs the usual 144 or 156 player fields.

Holes To Watch

Holes 3, 4 & 5

Holes 3 Thru 5 is known as the Horrible Horseshoe. It is the second toughest 3 thru 5 hole stretch on the PGA Tour averaging +.465 strokes over par since 2003. The par 4 481 yard 5th hole is the worst as it is always in the top 50 hardest every season. About one out of every three golfers leave with a bogey or worse. There has only been 552 birdies vs 1867 bogeys or doubles since 2000. The Horrible Horseshoe has played to a combined score-to-par total of 6,999-over par while the other 15 holes have played to 1,166-under par since 1983.

Holes 13

This is the party hole for those attending this weekend. It is a fun 190 yard par 3 surrounded by grandstands.

Players To Watch

Justin Rose

Rare treat as Rose is playing here for the 1st time since 2010 to fulfill a PGA card requirement. He is a world class player who should find success this week.

David Lingmerth

If you want to watch someone who knows how to get around the Horrible Horseshoe, he is your guy. Since 1983, he is the current scoring leader thru this 3 hole stretch.

Webb Simpson

Will Webb Simpson have a letdown after winning the Players? If not this is a course that fits his game as driver is taken out of the equation on many holes. He can win this week if his balls striking is anywhere near what it was 2 weeks ago.

Jon Rahm

He will be one of the rare players bombing driver on holes not meant to be driven. It worked pretty well last year with a T2. This course reminds him of a few places back home in Spain.
