Did you catch our recent review of the 2024 C-130 Sun Mountain golf cart bag? If you did, you should also check out our post on “21 Things Everyone Should Keep in a Golf Bag.”

If you’ve recently added that Sun Mountain cart bag to your collection, do it justice by making sure you’re loading it properly.

Loading It Right

Here are some general rules for loading a golf cart bag properly so that you can access what you need - while protecting your gear.

Drivers and Woods at the Top

The general rule to follow here is to load your clubs with the longest shafts at the top of the bag. This means your drivers and woods.

Also, drivers and woods are likely to be clean (except for maybe a little water and grass on the club face) so keeping them together is wise.

Also, all modern driver and wood shafts are graphite fiber, so keeping them away from the harder steel shafts of irons is imperative.

Hybrids and Irons in the Middle

Irons are shorter than drivers and they often have steel shafts, so it’s best to keep them near each other so they don’t damage your other golf shafts.

Wedges at the Bottom

Wedges are usually pretty short, too, and these are likely to be covered with more water, grass, dirt, and sand, so keeping them far from your drivers, with the irons in between, is a good move.

The other reason you want these at that bottom is that if you have your bag on a slant, like most do, they won’t dump sand and dirt into the bottom of your bag.

Putters in the Putter Well

One thing to note here: keep your putters in the putter well, whether that’s at the top or the bottom of the bag.

Keeping your putter sequestered will help prevent damage to it.

Use Club Head Covers (and Clean Your Club Heads)

Keep all of your clubs (especially your drivers, woods, and putters) covered. This not only protects these clubs but prevents them from damaging each other.

Another note: keep your club heads clean. If they’re dirty, wipe them off with a towel before you put them away, and definitely before you cover them. You don’t want to cover them dirty and wet as the cover will trap moisture that can cause corrosion or worse.

Use Your Other Pockets Wisely

Last but not least, it’s important to organize your pockets wisely and use them for what they’re designed for.

For important small items like notepads, pens, tees, and golf balls, keep these in small pockets at the top of the bag that are easy to find and sift through. You don’t want these little items swimming through larger pockets, getting obscured by larger gear. You want them right up front where you can easily find them.

Bags like the 2024 C-130 also have dedicated pockets for clothing. Use these for what they’re intended for and keep at least one spare towel in them as well.

Bags like these also have lined, dedicated pockets for expensive personal items like your wallet, phone, keys, and rangefinder. Use the velour-lined pockets as intended so you never have to divert your attention looking for something when you could have just organized your bag properly in the first place.

Bags like this also have pockets specialized for refreshments, like ventilated cooler pockets. Keep your food and drinks in these to keep them cool (or hot) and so that if there ever are any spills, there’s minimal mess and less of a chance that that stuff ends up on your clothing or sensitive electronics.

Why Take Such Pains?

Loading your golf cart bag properly is not simply a matter of vanity. It is absolutely essential to enjoying a quality day at the range or on the course.

Loading your golf bag in such fashion, first off, will prevent your gear from getting damaged. It will also make it easier to access your clubs and equipment.

It will also make it easier for you to carry and load the bag, not to mention the fact it will help prevent you from getting disorganized and losing anything.
